From a 12-year-old member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to the esteemed post of the Mayor of Pune and now a current candidate for BJP Pune Lok Sabha Constituency. Murlidhar Mohol’s journey is a testament to his dedication and perseverance.

Born on November 9, 1974, in Pune, Maharashtra, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Shivaji University, Kolhapur, all the while showcasing his ability in wrestling at the national level, Murlidhar Mohol has emerged as a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics.

Commencing his career with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), an organisation committed to national development, Mohol later ventured into politics, actively engaging with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) at the city level. Over his 30-year political tenure, he has assumed pivotal roles within the BJP, the world’s largest political party. He also serves as the General Secretary of BJP Maharashtra State.

Addressing the pressing need for an autonomous medical college system to address crises such as the Corona pandemic, Murlidhar Mohol remarked, “Soon, a medical college will be established to cater to the healthcare needs of Pune’s residents” (Nov 12, 2020).

The Bhartiya Janata Party embarked on a significant endeavour to establish a PMC-run medical college within Pune City. This initiative was first introduced during the BJP’s inaugural Standing Committee Budget session of 2017-18, under the chairmanship of Murlidhar Mohol. The medical college project was named Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College, with an initial allocation of Rs. 25 crores. Following the esteemed BJ Medical College, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College now stands as the city’s second government-run medical institution.

Reflecting on Pune’s status as “one of the most liveable cities in the country and a hub of education, information technology and the automobile industry, but its rapid urbanisation has increased vehicular pollution, so the civic body is working on promoting the use of EVs in the public transport system” – (Jun 17, 2021)

Under his leadership as Mayor, Pune earned distinction as one of the 50 champion cities for the 2021 Global Mayors Challenge, recognizing its innovative urban solutions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said, “When we visit foreign countries, we are envious of their rivers and the state they are in. The first question that came to our mind was why do we not have such rivers in our country and city. Today, we have given our nod to two important projects which will help keep our city clean and beautiful. All parties have supported these projects and approved them unanimously.

In 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Pollution Abatement of Rivers Mula-Mutha project in Pune, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). With JICA’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) amounting to Rs. 1470 crore, this initiative aims to address the environmental challenges posed by pollution in the Mula-Mutha River. Present at this momentous inaugural occasion were SUZUKI Satoshi, Japan’s Ambassador to India, alongside Murlidhar Mohol, then Mayor of Pune.

Reflecting on this achievement, Murlidhar Mohol remarked, “From Resolution to Accomplishment; Pune Metro trial tomorrow! The dream of metro seen by the people of Pune is coming true tomorrow.” (Jul 29, 2021)

Punekars celebrated a long-awaited milestone as Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a 12 km segment of the Pune Metro on March  06 2022, marking significant progress in the city’s transportation infrastructure. The Pune Metro Rail Project received approval from the Government of India in 2016, with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laying the Foundation Stone on December 26, 2016.

We have procured 1,500 electric buses in the past couple of years and aim to reach 2,000 by December. We are one of the few cities in the country with such an ambitious plan. Gradually, the city will transition towards fully embracing electric vehicles, supported by accessible charging stations,” stated Murlidhar Mohol. (Jun 18, 2021)

In alignment with Pune’s commitment to clean and sustainable transportation, Prime Minister Modi dedicated a fleet of 150 Electric Buses, augmenting green urban mobility. Additionally, an Electric Bus Depot, equipped with a charging station at Baner, was inaugurated. Under Mr. Mohol’s leadership, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) procured 458 electric buses, fostering the early adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Pune stands as the pioneer in Maharashtra, spearheading the implementation of the E-Bus project and setting a precedent for energy-efficient urban infrastructure. His initiatives have garnered widespread public support, marking a significant step towards the city’s development.
